What prompted the idea for the course? As a religion professor, I’ve come to know many students from other countries who identify as Christian. I realized they were puzzled at some of the things Americans often bundled into their faith – things these international Christians didn’t consider relevant to their own religious identity. One issue in particular sparked a question from a South Asian Christian student: Why did American evangelicals seem to have such an affinity for firearms? For example, Pew Research indicates 41% of white evangelicals own a firearm, compared with 30% of people in the U.S. overall. This unsettled the student,…

Bradley Cooper is weighing on a controversy surrounding his portrayal of legendary conductor and composer Leonard Bernstein. When the first photos were released from his upcoming biopic Maestro, some critics zeroed in on the actor’s prosthetic nose and accused the film of being antisemitic. Some used the arguably derogatory term “jewface” to describe the characterization. Talking to CBS Mornings on Tuesday, Cooper was asked about the debate and said he initially considered not using a prosthetic. “I thought, ‘Maybe we don’t need to do it,’” he said. “But it’s all about balance, and, you know, my lips are nothing like Lenny’s, and my chin.…

Publishing rights usually stay with publishers and songwriters, with recorded writs belonging to labels and performers. After securing the rights, these companies get all the money from royalties, licensing, brand deals and other revenue streams that would generally go to…

Sith lightsabers are carefully designed to make them the best duelists in Star Wars, but Ahsoka is trained to match and even beat them. There’s a sense in which the lightsaber is a strange tool for a Jedi to use, given they are supposed to be peacekeepers and not warriors. Still, as seen in Star Wars: The High Republic, there have been times when the mere sight of an activated lightsaber was enough to cause combatants to lay down their weapons. There are actually many different types of lightsaber, ranging from the more basic designs used by prequel era Jedi to the crossguard…
