Lil Durk is going to be tried for murder-for-hire later this year, and he is accused of threatening witnesses.
It was a case of the Chicago drill star trying to get the charges against him dropped. He is suspected of killing Quando Rondo’s cousin in 2022.
As an answer to Durk’s request to have the case thrown out, prosecutors say that he has threatened witnesses while he has been in jail.
“[Lil Durk] is not on trial for his lyrics or music; he is on trial because he planned, directed, and paid for the blatant murder plot in this case,” U.S. Attorney Bilal A. Essayli said.
Durk and his lawyers said the case against him should be thrown out because the words of the song were used as proof against him, even though the song was recorded months before the attack on Rondo that killed his cousin.
The words to Durk’s song “Wonderful Wayne & Jackie Boy” were a big part of the prosecution’s case and helped get the rapper arrested in the first place.
After that, a judge said that Durk’s lyrics could not be used as proof in his future trial.
When the government planned to use Durk’s songs against him in court, his family spoke out against them.
In an Instagram post, the drill star’s family criticized what the people in charge were doing.
According to what they said, recent events in Durk’s case have revealed a hard truth: the government lied to a grand jury in order to charge him. This is not fair. “That goes against the system that is supposed to keep us all safe.”
The statement goes on to say, “Durk has always used music to tell stories, show pain, and get better, but now those same lyrics are being used against him.” We won’t keep quiet while Black artists are still being jailed for being creative. “Rap is art.”
The family also asked people to support Durk while he is in jail until his trial later this year. “As a family, we are asking the public, the fans, and the culture to stand with us,” they said. Support what’s right. Be a fair person. Help “The Voice.”
Durk is still being held in jail until next month, when he will have another bond hearing.
